Atal Tinkering Labs

ATL is an approach of Central government of India to create an environment of scientific temperament, innovation, creativity amongst Indian Students. It is a step towards a new India.

Since the last few decades, our education system has seen a paradigm shift. Today, with this approach of inculcating Hands on Methodology in the current education scenario we have resolved the need of the hour.

ATL lab would teach students essential 21st-century skills which will help them in developing their professional and personal skills. Skilled India is the need of the hour and each step taken this dream should be welcomed and we should work towards it together for a better India.

The Government of India has setup the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) at NITI Aayog. Realizing the need to create scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation among young minds, AIM proposes to support the establishment of a network of Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL). ATL is a workspace where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands-on do-it-yourself mode and learn innovation skills. The vision is to cultivate 1 Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators.

Objective

ATL would contain educational and learn “do it yourself” kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers etc.

The introduction of ATL tinkering labs promises a multi-faceted growth of students in STEM subjects due to its innovative approach and the success tinkering has achieved in various parts of the world. It is very essential to know why these labs are called as “Tinkering” Labs. The word tinkering means that it is apt to try new things out and develop a “let’s try something new” approach. These labs will inculcate ability to experiment with various electronic, robotic, and technology tools; understanding their potential and creating a solution for local problems using ideation as a starting point.

Since the inception of the ATL initiative by NITI Aayog, it has been quite important for schools to have a complete ATL set-up at their facilities, and contribute as much as possible in this noble endeavour for a betterment of students through STEM education. Schools are now adapting to a more progressive way of teaching and are realising the need to create a scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation among young minds. This is where we propose to support establishment of a network of Tinkering Laboratories. Skyrim has designed a unique curriculum which is in sync with the leading school boards.

One of the major objectives of introducing tinkering activities to aid STEM is to instil innovative traits in students. By its very definition, innovative needs an invention. However, in the true meaning, the right word should be “create” and not “invent” but the process of creating should follow the principles or format of an invention. So, the students should be able to understand and apply the scientific principles during the process of creation, rather than following the instructions or just relying on hit and tries approach.

Hence, even before the tinkering labs are formally established in schools, the teachers, and expert trainers should design a few invention modules that should be the end result of specific tinkering activities. For example, if the students are being taught about the principles of light, they should be encouraged to invent the camera that should operate on clapping or the bulb that should be switched on when a person claps.

The challenge that most schools shall face during the setup of these ATLs will be in finding suitable equipment along with appropriate training and support to run it smoothly. Hence the government authority has come up with an indicative vendors list to provide equipment for setting up Atal Tinkering laboratories. And this is where Team Skyrim Innovation comes in.
